Imani's gorgeous locs

I have been growing my locs for over 10 years. My mother was my inspiration, and when I turned 7, I practically begged her to loc my hair. Although, It was not an easy journey. During the beginning stages of my loc process I was often ridiculed my my peers and even by some adults who disagreed with my choice of hairstyle. It was discouraging and at times I contemplated cutting all my locs off just so that I could fit in. As i grew older I began to appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of my locs. Wahidah Fowler, who is a close friend of my older sister, also was a catalyst in helping me see the beautiful hairstyles that locs could become.

I began moisturizing my roots and really loving and caring for my hair. Before I knew it, blogs began posting my pictures, my peers complimented me left and right. I was becoming a trend setter in my high school and everyone wanted to know how I managed to make my locs look so appealing. Now I am sharing my story with you actually because I never have before.

Your blog continues to inspire me and I appreciate your work so much for shining a light that is not often shined upon our beautiful, God given, natural hair. I am going to college this upcoming Fall and I plan to continue growing out my locs and hopefully inspiring other Black women to join in on our journey of "Natural Hair Beauty".

Meet Chandra!

My Natural Hair Bio: I have been 100% natural for 3 years. It was my interest in the use of natural hair care products on my relaxed hair that lead me to become more curious in obtaining healthy hair over all. I transitioned for 9 months before I big chopped. I was left with about 4 to 5 inches of natural hair and that began my journey of learning how to perfect my all natural texture. My texture is thick, cottony, coarse, prone to dryness, and tangles. I had many obstacles to overcome, and things to learn about my hair if I was going to remain natural. (Yr 1 I had to force myself to forget about the ease of caring for relaxed hair) I poured my self into extensive research through books, blogs, dictionaries, hair boards, personal experiments, you tube, you name it! Through it all I've learned how to master moisture balance, strength, soft ends, length retention, thicker edges, minimal shedding, and little to no breakage. In three years I have been able to grow my hair to the longest and healthiest its ever been in my life. My journey has inspired me to help others who are interested in embracing and perfecting the natural hair that grows from their scalps.

Products: I use Hydratherma Naturals, Shea Moisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothie and EVOO as staples.

My Blog: Happy Healthy Hair  - the inspiration behind my blog is to share my journey and to provide helpful practical natural hair care tips to other women who are seeking in depth answers to the puzzling questions they other wise would not get answers to in one place. I want every woman to know that she can have "good hair", ultimately, that is healthy hair that's theirs, and makes them happy! When I first started my journey in 2008/2009 I had to dig deep, and jump all over the place to get practical "direct" answers to my natural hair care questions. Most of the blogs and sites that I would visit were very heavy on natural hair inspirations (which I also needed!). But not too many details on hair care and how to obtain hair that isn't dry, unpliable, or breaking. One of my first successful blog posts was, How to grow your Hair with Braid extensions. Many women would experience growth with braid extensions, but said their hair wouldn't be healthy. I shared how I grew my twa to slightly past shoulder length in 12 months with braids. My hair was full and healthy with no balding edges. I shared from beginning to end what I did every single session and many found this extremely helpful. It's been over 2 years since I've started my Healthy Happy Hair blog and it still makes me extremely fulfilled to know that I am actually helping people achieve their hair care goals! I am in Texas, where I share my love for helping local naturals achieve their dreams of owning their own head of hair that is long, full, healthy, and happy!

Model De'Anne Roye

Name: De'Anne Roye

Q: What is your hair story? What kind of hair styles have you rocked, before embracing your natural hair?
A: My hair story is that relaxer were not working. My hair just kept breaking, so I decide to end the process. I have actually had two big chops because of heat damage. I rocked a bob, extensions, and short hairstyles like Halle Berry's do.

Q: When and why did you decide to start wearing your hair naturally?
A: I went natural about 3 and 1/2 years ago. I went natural because I was tired of the damage relaxer's were causing, and wanted a fresh start.

Q: Did you have any big fears about going back to your natural texture?
A: Yes, I did not know how to style my hair natural; I have not seen my natural hair since I was 9 years old. I'm model and I was worried I was not going to be able to get any work, but it actually turned out to be a blessing because I booked bigger jobs like Cititrends, and Walmart and other print retailers. So I just stopped being in fear and started embracing my hair.

Q: What are three products you can't live without for nurturing/styling your hair?
A: I have to have Shandy's Whipped Cream Hair Moisturizer, Carol's Daughter Hair Smoothie, and Wide Tooth Comb.

Q: What would you say to someone who's thinking about embracing their natural hair, but scared about being rejected in various parts of their lives?
A: I would say people will accept your hair if you’re confident with your look, and practice makes perfect, so keep practicing and you will get better at it :).

Q: How can we keep up with you and your journey i.e. blog, twitter, facebook, fotki, tumblr, personal or professional website?
A: I would go to www.shandyswhippedcream.com or www.facebook.com/royedeannemodel. Thank you.

One Brown Crafter

One Brown Crafter = Art + Craft + Culture

ABOUT ONE BROWN CRAFTER
One Brown Crafter is a blog that was created 19 months ago by illustrator, recycling crafter, and DIY expert Tracy Viverretta, to give voice to culturally diverse artists and crafters by showcasing their work. OBC was also created to share art related resources and information, establish a positive, uplifting creative community and to celebrate cultural diversity. The name of the blog came about as a result of Tracy participating in various craft fairs and being the “one brown crafter”. After constantly wondering where all the other artists and crafters of color were and why they weren't at these fairs, she created the blog to seek them out so she could showcase their work and establish a creative community.
ABOUT THE 2013 "NATURAL HAIR ART PROJECT"
Spawned by a love of natural hair, Tracy created the "Natural Hair Art Project", which is a reflection of that love. So every Friday for 52 Fridays, she shows a new piece of artwork that could be an illustration, collage, textile painting, embroidery, hand lettering, plush doll or any number of crafty projects - all related to natural hair.

CALL FOR ARTISTS + CRAFTERS: She's always looking for new artists and crafters to feature on the One Brown Crafter blog, so all of her contact info is below. If you have any questions, email her at onebrowncrafter@gmail.com.

Our Next Generation of Natural Beauties!

I love this photo that I spotted on African Heritage City.  Such a beautiful group of young ladies. It is a reminder that if we are taught to love our hair & features at a young age - that we will love who we are from the beginning.
